Lecture:

 July 29, 2020: A Lecture on “Using Microsoft Teams for Remote Teaching” was delivered by Ms Bhavna Mittal, Microsoft Innovative Expert Educator

August 13, 2020: Lecture on “Using Google Classroom and Google Meet for Remote Teaching” delivered by   Dr. Nityananda Agasti for faculty members of Department of Chemistry

November 27, 2020: Inaugural lecture of "COVALENCE" (The Chemical Society) on  Synthetic Oligonucleotides as a new class of Drugs” was delivered by Dr. Vivek Kumar Sharma, Senior Scientist, Intellia Therapeutics, Cambridge, MA, USA using online platform Zoom. The lecture was organized under the aegis of DBT star college scheme by Dr. Vinod Kumar, Dr. Kapil Bohra and Dr. Sachin Mittal.

January 23, 2021: A lecture on “Molecular Modelling and Drug Design” was delivered by Dr. Neeta Azad, Assistant Professor, ARSD College using online platform Zoom. The Lecture was Organized by Dr. Chayannika Singh, Dr. Vinod Kumar and Dr. Sachin Mittal.

Orientation Program

November 19, 2020: Orientation Program was organized by the Department for the students of first semester of B.Sc.(H) Chemistry and B.Sc. (Phy. Sc.) with Chemistry. Dr. Sachin Mittal, teacher-in-charge of the department introduced the faculty members and apprised the students about the various activities organized by the department.

Teachers Day Celebrations

September 5, 2020: The Teachers day was organised by the students of B.Sc.(H) Chemistry III / V Sem, to show their gratitude for their Teachers. Students organised various events like recitation of poems, dance performance using of digital platforms.

Alumni Interaction Program

March 6, 2021: An online “Alumni Interaction Program” was organized by Dr. Mahaveer and Dr. Sachin Mittal. The alumni of the Department, Mr. Praveen K. Budhakoti, Ph. D Scholar, Goethe University, Frankfurt, Ms. Palak Manchanda, Ph.D. Scholar, Purdue University and Ms. Ayesha Seth, Ph.D. Scholar Ohio State University interacted with Students of Chemistry Department and discussed the avenues available after Graduation and also about the research they are undertaking at their respective Universities. Principal, Dr. H.C. Jain, graced the function by his presence and blessed the students.

September 9, 2020: Online paper presentation Competition on “Chemistry in Powders - Case Studies” organized by Dr. Reema Chhabra

October 9, 2020:  An intra-class Quiz Competition “QUIZ-O-ZYME” was organized by Dr. Reema Chhabra

November 12, 2020: Dr. Jyoti organized an online Paper presentation competition on “Solid State Materials in Industries” for the students of Department of Chemistry.

November 6, 2020: Paper presentation Competition was organized for the students by Dr. Vinod Kumar and Dr. Chayannika Singh   using MS Power point presentations on various topics of chemistry such as Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Valance bond theory, Chemistry in everyday life, Chemistry in Corona virus research, Exploring polymers, Graphene, use of specific reagents in organic chemistry and Salts & its uses.

November 24, 2020: Intra Class online quiz competition was organized by Dr. Kapil Bohra, Dr. Sangeeta Talwar and Dr. Sachin Mittal for students of B.Sc. Physical Science with Chemistry, semester-III

2019-2020

18 July, 2019: The academic session started with an Orientation program where teachers interacted with the first-year students and their parents.

27 July, 2019: As a part of Induction program a local tour was organised. The students along with four teachers visited India Gate, the War memorial and National Science Centre. 10 August, 2019: Election of the office bearers of COVALENCE was conducted.

4 September, 2019: The inaugural lecture was organised on the theme “Gifts of Science to the Society” by Prof. Ashok K. Ganguli, Department of Chemistry, IIT, Delhi.

4th -5th October, 2019: The annual festival “Rasayanotsava” was organised and various events like Paper presentation, Periodic Gyan, Poster making, Chemical Tambola, Dumb Charades, Radical Scavanger were held.

3rd January, 2020: 3 alumni were invited for an interaction with the students. Ms Sushmita Yadav (Pursuing Ph.D., from DU); Mr Kusharga Yadav (Pursuing Ph.D. from NPL, New Delhi) and Mr Anuj Kumar (pursuing Ph.D. from University of Bonn, Germany) graced the occasion.

29th January, 2020: A lecture series on Green Chemistry was organised. Prof. Ram S. Mohan, Department of Chemistry, Illinois Wesleyan University, Bloomington, USA, spoke on “Better Living through Green Chemistry: An Introduction to Toxic Molecules”; and “Better Living through Green Chemistry: Case Studies”

14th February, 2020: A city tour trip was organised for the students under the student induction program. Four teachers along with 130 students visited Bahai (Lotus) Temple, Waste to Wonder Park and Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum.

4th March, 2020: An Industrial Trip was organised for the students of final year students in which six teachers along with 41 students visited Moon Beverages Ltd. (Coca-Cola Happiness Factory), Greater Noida.

2018-2019

18th July, 2018: The academic session 2018-19 started with an orientation programme in the department to apprise the students and their parents about the department, faculty and various activities of the department to be organised during the session.

13th August, 2018: First activity of the department was the elections of the office bearers of the chemical society “Covalence”.

14th September, 2018: Interaction programme with the first year students of B.Sc. (H) Chemistry and B.Sc. (Physical Science) with chemistry was conducted to get the feedback about the college and department.

9th October, 2018: The paper reading and chemical dumb charade competitions were organised where the students presented papers on topics like shampoos, carbon emissions, solar cells, deforestation etc.

February 23, 2019: The department organized an industrial trip to Mother Dairy plant, Patparganj, New Delhi; to apprise the students about the milk collection, pasteurization, packaging and distribution in Delhi region. On the same day, students also visited the National Handicrafts Design Gallery and Earth Treasurers Museum, Baba Kharak Singh Marg, New Delhi.

March 07, 2019: The department organized a talk by Dr. Pramod K. Upadhyaya, Scientist VII, National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi. He delivered an enlightening lecture on the topic “Beauties of the Heaven and Practicing Science”.

2017-2018

Covalence, society of Department of Chemistry, facilitated various activities for students and faculty:

  • An inaugural lecture on “Chemical Pathways to Use Carbohydrates as Cheap Starting Material to Prepare Modified Nucleosides as Antisense Drugs and Molecules for Drug Delivery” was delivered by Prof. Ashok Prasad, P.G. Department of Chemistry, University of Delhi on September 8, 2017.
  • An industry-academia interaction program was organised on January 9, 2018 under the aegis of DBT-Star College Scheme for presentation cum demonstration of safe handling, manufacturing process of Borosilicate glass, Calibration of glassware, do's and don’ts in laboratory and proper uses of glassware in laboratory by experts from “BOROSIL” company.
  • Yakult Danone India Pvt. Ltd., a probiotic diary product industry, Sonepat, Haryana was visited on March 10, 2018 under the aegis of DBT-Star College Scheme.
  • The annual departmental festival was organised on March 21-22, 2018 and was inaugurated by Prof. Ramesh Chandra, Head, Department of Chemistry, University of Delhi and Dr. R.M. Kohli, retd. Principal, Shyam Lal College graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
    • A lecture on “Chemistry of Foods” was delivered by Prof. J.M. Khurana, University Of Delhi.
    • Competitions like Inter-college quiz, Paper presentation, Debate, Chemical Tambola, Cross-words, Ad-mad, Creative writing were organised.

2016-2017

The activities of the society started with the election of the office bearers in August, 2016. This was followed with celebration of the Teacher‘s Day on 5th September 2016. The students gave a cultural performance and felicitated the teachers. The inaugural lecture was delivered by Prof. V. S. Parmar, eminent professor from Department of chemistry, University of Delhi titled ―Current challenges in Science and Society: Opportunities for young students‖on Feb 8, 2017. He talked about green chemistry as one of the most important philosophies in chemistry and related sciences and that it represents a major change in the way we think about practicing chemistry. In Continuance of the tradition of visiting at least one chemical industry every academic session to familiarize the students with the manufacturing process of products related to day to day life, a visit to Greenlam Industries Pvt. Ltd., Behror, Rajasthan was organised on Feb 18-19, 2017. Greenlam is a premier industry for the manufacture of laminates, which is totally dependent upon resins and adhesives. The chemistry and basic principles of manufacture of laminates of various types was well explained by their chemists. The inter college annual chemical fest ―Rasayanotsava-2017‖ took place on Feb 27-28, 2017. The fest started with a talk by Dr Nityanand Agasthi on ‗Nanoparticles inside carbon nanotubes: a new class of materials‘. He explained various aspects of his research work which he carried out during one year academic visit at University of Nottingham, United Kingdom. The academic and fun activities of the fest like debate, Ad-Mad, T-shirt painting, creative writing, science quiz and chemical tambola witnessed energetic participatation from different colleges of University of Delhi.

2015-2016

  • The society organised two subjectlectures in the session. First, lecture on “Chemical entities in Cancer imaging” was presented by Dr. Anil Kumar Mishra, Additional Director, DRDO, and Institute of Nuclear Medicine in August 2015. The second lecture on “the Role of forensic science in white collar crimes”was delivered by Dr. S.C.Mittal Executive Director of premier Forensic Institute & Labs in September 2015.
  • A National Seminar of two days, supported by commission for Scientific & Technical terminology MHRD, was organized on “Technical Terminology and Science Teaching”in Feb., 2015. The seminar introduced vocabulary prepared by Scientific and Technology Commission of MHRD to the participants ranging from faculty members from various colleges, administrators,scientists,officers and engineerswho in turn will facilitate students to excel in higher education especially from Hindi medium.
  • The annual fest ‘Rasayanotsava’ was organised on 12th & 13th Feb 2016.
  • A group of 38 students along with faculty visited Patanjali Ayurved Ltd.Haridwar, Uttrakhand in Feb.2016 .They visited food processing and Ayurvedic division at Patanjali Food & Herbal park, Haridwar
  • Besides various inter class activities were organised during the session such as extempore competition, Discussion on Contemplation of three years of chemistry Education in College, Quiz competition, Paper Presentation etc.
2014-2015
 
  • Chemical Society has organized several events during 2014-15 sessions. The Inaugural Lecture of “covalence”, was delivered by Prof. D.S. Rawat on 26th August 2014 of the Department of Chemistry, University of Delhi, Delhi.  His talk was on "Excitement and agony of a medicinal chemist”. In order to strengthen the bond between teacher and student, Teacher's day was celebrated, which was solely organized by students of B.Sc (H) Chemistry.
  • One day workshop was organized by chemistry department on “Research based techniques in chemistry” on 10th October 2014. 37 students of B.Sc (H) Chemistry Sem-V participated and attended this three session workshop. These sessions were on "spectroscopy in research", "column chromatography- an essential tool in research" and "chemistry made easy with computers".
  • Students of chemistry society also participated in inter-college competitions in which they got III prize in "Fun in lab", II prize in Treasure hunt competition and II prize in "power point presentation".
  • A one day industrial trip to the ''Sonepat Coop. Sugar Mills Ltd'', Kami Road, Sonepat- 131001, Haryana and nearby Frost Falcon distillery was organized by chemical society. Group of 42 students accompanied with 6 teachers visited this industry and had a glimpse of sugar industry in order to have a better appreciation of practical applications of theory.
  • Chemical Society also organized a lecture workshop on 25-26 March, 2015 conducted by Prof. P. S. Kalsi on stereochemistry and spectroscopy.  These lectures were of immense help to students not only in their undergraduate studies but also served as a preliminary text for postgraduate studies.
